Last Saturday, Brazil had a CD release party in Indy. Cindy and I invited several friends to go, most of whom actually made it. There was one guy who made up some lame ass excuse, but he's generally a pretty good person so we'll let it go this time.
My niece and her friend showed up late (a trait my niece inherited honestly from her mother) and we were off to Indy. Should you ever be driving south on 69 and miss your exit onto 465, there's a simple remedy. Go home and start over. I turned around, headed north looking for the 465 on-ramp. After many turns, I discovered that the only way is to get back on 69 south and try again.
Anyway, we finally found the Irving Theatre on Washington street. We chatted with James and Aaron at the trailer while James tried to set it on fire. James "got his tie straightened" by a fake blonde in the parking lot. Then we headed in.
The Irving is an old movie house that has been stripped. The seats, carpet, ceiling, everything was gone down to the concrete. There was a nice sized stage at the far end and lots of space to wander. Unfortunately, there ended up being space all night. There was another show in town, the venue didn't serve alcohol, and it was homecoming at Ball State. I think all of these worked against the band. It didn't seem to affect the spirit of those who were there, though, and in the end, it was a decent sized bunch all gathered around the stage.
There were three bands on before Brazil. I didn't keep track of names (I'm a bad reporter) but my favorite was the band that played the pot and the radio thing. No, that's not a song. That's a couple of the instruments one of the guys played. A pot as in a cooking device. The radio thing I loved but have never seen before. He basically played it by moving his hand about it and getting feedback. Very consistant musical feedback.
When Brazil was ready to take the stage, they brought out the party favors. Several very large beach balls and a few hundred balloons. The beach balls were a great hit, even if it did lead to Tom and my niece quoting AC/DC at each other. That's just wrong.
The show was great. I didn't keep track, but I think they played pretty much everything on the new album The Philosophy of Velocity and did a great job of it. Newby also had his own party favors. He made muffins. I'm told that they were cranberry and that they were quite tasty. They also flew at the audience quite well. Seems like I heard that Newby was a pitcher in high school.
There was a costume contest. Cindy and I won a prize (thanks entirely to Cindy's creativity). She made Brazil t-shirts with the new album cover. She also had earrings with the two previous album covers. For a country girl, my wife really was getting into this rock scene. When asked what her costume was, she said "I'm a Brazil nut!". Groan if you will (and I did) but it got us a couple of unreleased CD's. The cool thing is that it was of a concert that we had attended back in 2001. Naturally, when Newby was passing out the prizes, he said the first prize went to "the Brazil nuts. You know who you are.". We were also referred to as "The Monsters".
During the final song, Newby did something I can honestly say I've never seen at a show before. He made pancakes.
Onstage.
Well, on a hotplate, but you get the idea. The man's got style. Style and mad cooking skilz.
So, to sum up:
1. Great show. They get better everytime I hear them.
2. Beach balls gravitate towards idiots who then try to destroy the band's equipment with them.
3. Muffins fly very well.
4. Beach balls stick in the rafters of old theaters.
5. If you get dressed in a parking lot, you can get your tie straightened by a cute girl.
6 Brazil can rock!
7 Newby can cook.
8 If you put on handcuffs, be sure who has the key. Right, Nic?
9 If the band is selling their new CD at half price, don't walk off and forget to buy a couple of the damn things.
and finally...
