Couple weeks ago, Tony and I went to Indy to see the Church play. For those of you who know me (and if you don't know me, drop me a line and get to know me. I'm sweet and charming. Just ask me, I'll tell you I am.), you know that it's one of my favorite musical groups.
Tony and I had been to see them perform live once before in April of 2002. The show was awful. It was at the Magic Stick in Detroit. The place was oversold and packed. You couldn't hear the band for all the drunks around yammering about what song the "really" wanted them to play. And to top it all off, the building lost power during the show. Twice. Tim Powles, the drummer, was introduced to the crowd in complete darkness. Truly awful.
Flash forward to 2006, Indianapolis. The Music Mill looks like an Escapades that's gone out of business. The inside was done fairly well. The stage was large enough for the group to move around a bit. The merch tables weren't jammed into a corner. All in all, not a bad place.
The show opened with Rob Dickinson, formerly of The Catherine Wheel. I'd heard of the Catherine Wheel, but never listened to them. After Rob's show, I'll be checking them out. Rob did an acoustic version of his solo album and blew us away. I've been conditioned to not expect much from an opener, but to be proven wrong is a delight. I highly recommend you pick up a copy of "Fresh Wine for the Horses". You won't be disappointed.
The Church came on after a disagreement from one of the stage techs and the whoever was playing the filler music between sets. She obviously motioned to him several times to cut off the music. I think towards the end of the exchange, the slashing movements across her neck weren't an indication to kill the music but rather a threat of bodily harm if he didn't stop the canned crap and let the live band come out.
Come out they did and they totally rocked. I'll still admit I like they're older stuff better, but that's meant as a compliment to the older stuff and not as a knock on the new album. Kilby's voice isn't what it was but it's still a damn sight better than most of the pop singers today who know one tune and apply it to every freaking song they perform. Marty Willson-Piper can still make an acoustic guitar do things that most rockers can't do with an electic axe. They've been at it for 26 years and they've still got what it takes.
The place was small enough that the band could interact a bit with the crowd. Kilbey's deft reply to a pair of smitten and drunk identical twins was simply that he was bored with identical twins and had moved on to identical triplets.
"Uninvited, like the clouds" is the new album, but I'd recommend starting with "Starfish", "Heyday", or "Gold Afternoon Fix"
Aw, what the hell. You're going to either hate them or want everything they've put out, so buy whatever you can lay your hands on.
